Standards-Based Instruction in Mathematics
"I really like the sequence JBHM presents the objectives for Algebra I as it applies to the state test. I've been teaching for 15 years. This is my first experience with JBHM. I like the order of topics better than any textbook I've ever used. Thank you, JBHM for maximizing the potential of my Algebra I students."
--Coach Greg Ellzey, Columbia High School Algebra 1 teacher
In response to national standards and the need to rethink classroom strategies, JBHM Education Group has founded its Standards-Based Instruction in Mathematics. This exciting initiative is an out-of-the-box approach to teaching middle school and high school students by catching their attention and, in turn, allowing them to enjoy math! The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Curriculum and Evaluation Standards has advocated since 1989 that all math classrooms center on problem-solving, communication, reasoning, and connections. These themes allow students to discover and explore mathematics with the appropriate use of manipulatives, technology, and cooperative learning groups. Furthermore, the Curriculum Framework requires that all students studying math understand how to:
- Recognize, generate, and extend patterns
- Work with algebraic symbols and notation
- Collect, organize, and display data
- Apply the basic concepts of probability
- Estimate and measure length, weight, and capacity with standard units of measurement
- Work with 2- and 3-dimensional figures, transformations, and coordinate geometry
The JBHM Mathematics Initiative addresses all these student needs and more, as lessons focus on hands-on classroom activities that are aligned with strands and content strands of the state framework.
